Five simple changes to reduce waste in your home
Hey everyone,
I want to talk about how easy and painless it is to be a little less wasteful everyday! I have a list of five things that can really make a difference if we look to the alternatives. In a world where plastic will outlive us all and our landfills are filled and our oceans are polluted it is time to take these small steps in our everyday life that will make a huge difference.
1) Reusable grocery bags
-
Plastic bags like most plastics do not biodegrade. They actually break down into tinier toxic pieces- this process is called photodegrading. The unfortunate reality is they are very prominent in our environment now causing threats to marine and terrestrial life. By switching to reusable bags we are not encouraging increased waste in the household every time we go for a grocery shop.
2) Beeswax wraps
-
Great alternative to plastic wrap ( and less annoying! I f***ing hate trying to rip a piece of plastic wrap off). Again one use plastics, no go!! Let’s move away from the waste and polluting our planet with toxins. The beeswax wrap works really well to cover up leftovers and they are easy to clean.
3) Reusable straws
-
Okay it is not enough to use the paper straws that are coming out. Don’t get me wrong they are a better alternative but we are trying to reduce waste here, all waste if we can! So investing in some reusable straws is a great way to reduce waste, there are a few different kinds that you can get. There are silicon and stainless steel ones I like them both and they come with their own cleaning brush.
4) Reusable travel mugs and water bottles
-
Bring a travel mug or water bottle to get your morning coffee or iced summer drinks A lot of places give a discount to you when you bring your own cups. Some people think that the coffee cup and plastic lid are recyclable but they aren’t actually. The to-go cups have a plastic lining and most recycling facilities will not accept them to be recycled. Bringing your own cups just reduces the waste that you contribute each morning.
5) Reusable Containers
-
I always try to go for the glass lunch containers just because they last forever! Plastic ones work too just anything that isn’t a one time use to hold your food for your lunches or road trip snacks. The idea is to ditch the sandwich baggies and plastic wrap, these are very wasteful, we are striving for zero waste containers for your food.
These are my five tips I hope they are helpful and inspire you to try and reduce the waste in your home. Please share if you have any tips of your own to reduce even more waste.
