My Experience with Reusable Pads
Hello everyone,
I have been trying to reduce the waste that leaves my household. It has been a slow transition. So we start small; starting with small things can make a world of difference for our environment. There is something that I have always wanted to try but have had some hesitation around it. I want to discuss my last couple of months using reusable pads during my period. It was honestly not hard to get used to them, and it has allowed me reduce more waste that comes from my home. These pads have fun patterns and designs and they are made in multiple sizes, for designed for various times of your cycle.
There are ones designed for your overnights, there are panty liners, some for regular flow, and heavy, there is a reusable pad made for you and your cycle. There is so much to choose from you just have to look!
You can get them online or I guarantee you can find someone local who makes or carries them. I know when you go to look them up you are probably see the price and be like yea no thanks, but you shouldn't and here is why. When you buy REUSABLE that means it is more than one use!! Unlike the pad packs that we buy at the grocery store or drug store where they are used once and then thrown away, you can wash these ones again and again. They are said to last 10 years or if you take good care of them and clean them properly they can last forever!
Let’s look at pricing for a pack of 18 pads it cost approximately $4.98 maybe more depending on what brand you buy. If you buy a pack of pads every cycle (once a month), and every month for a year at $4.98 you are spending $59.76 a year on one use pads. Over the course of ten years (the life of the reusable pads) you are looking at spending approximately $597.60 if you only buying 1 box of pads per month. Now I want you to go back and look at the price for the reusable pads still looks pricey but think of it as a one time purchase because unless they get terribly ruined you will have them for 10 years or possibly longer.
I feel like this would be a good time to move into how to properly take care of your reusable pads, it is so simple. After using your reusable pads, rinse them under cold running water, once you see that the water is running clear you can scrub the pads and then put it in the washer. You can use and detergent you would like if you feel that scrubbing before hand wasn't enough you can use something like baking soda to help get the stains out and just throw it in the wash. So easy. Hang to dry DO NOT PUT IN YOUR DRYER, this will definitely ruin your pad and/or reduce its uses.
Give it a try and let me know how it goes on my latest instagram, what you thought about your reusable pads!
xoxo Kristy
