Wash your face but don't be dirty about it!
As you can probably tell I love to use products that are reusable and can reduce my impact on the environment. That is why I want to just take a moment here and discuss make up remover face wipes, not only can they be bad for your skin but also are no friend to the environment. Sure they seem efficient and easy after a night out or a long day at work, but they only remove surface dirt and make up and take a lot of pressure to remove mascara and other make up that are in delicate areas of the face. These wipes use chemicals and alcohol which actually dry out your face, and can actually add to aging of the skin.
This is not a great way to cleanse the skin, and the efficiency of the wipes really hurt the environment. I want to get you guys thinking about ways to reduce the waste that is leaving our households. I am not saying that you need to become a waste free household over night but implementing small things will make for an easier transition and its honestly so f***ing easy! So I am starting by discussing make up remover wipes. Okay so here’s the thing, wet wipes are predominately made by of plastic (which is non-biodegradable) and they are very popular way to remove our make up, washing our faces of sweat after the gym, wiping dirt, food, sticky dessert off our faces. And then the are discarded, thrown away into our landfill, billions of plastics that do not disintegrate, staying on our planet for a long time. Or worse they get flushed down the toilet (for the record if you do this please please stop they are not meant to be flushed) They lead to blockages in our sewers and cause septic issues which then gets into costly fixes in order to rectify. Face make up remover wipes can end up in our water systems and thriving for lifetimes in the oceans. Face wipes are actually just as bad as plastic water bottles remaining up to 500+ years on the planet.
If you think about all the times in one year that you have used and tossed away a make up remover wipe, there is a lot of wipes floating around the planet. As I mentioned at the beginning I am a huge advocate for less waste in my home. Now there are wipes that are sustainable so you can always look into those but as I said I like the zero waste options. So here is my top picks for ditching the harsh chemicals, non-biodegradable one use make up remover wipes Erase Your Face reusable cloths and face mitt. All I do is add hot water and wipe my face and all my make up comes off, and then I hang it to dry and use it again until it needs to be washed. I absolutely love this product, not only do I save money from buying wipes all the time I am also saving money from having to buy make up remover that comes in plastic bottles that will be discarded after use. These Erase your Face cloths are a one time purchase and save money AND the planet!! My other suggestion it the good old fashioned face cloth with some water or your make up remover, same thing reusable, can wash and cuts back all the waste of the face wipes. Make up remover wipes can range in costs from $3.00-$28.00+ depending on brand and how many wipes the package come with. That means switching to reusable alternatives could save you up to $156.00 minimum a year, meanwhile saving your skin and our beautiful planet!
I invite you to switch it up and let me know what you have found works, perhaps any reusable products you’d like to share to leave the make up remover wipes behind and make the shift to more environmentally sustainable products.
xoxo
